Crys' Toe Up Slippers

Crys’ Slipper Pattern
*This is by no means an original design. I have seen them a million times before and tried a few different versions. This is just my version, which is worked toe up and in the round until the heel area. Hope you like them. If there are any errors or questions you may have please let me know.*

5mm needle (5 DPN’s & straight/circular)
WW yarn (held double) Approx 10oz
Tapestry needle

Note: When slipping stitches always do so as if to purl.

Figure 8 Cast on 20sts (10sts each needle). Knit across first needle, knit through back loops on second needle.

kfb in first and last st on both needles (24 sts).

kfb in first and last st on both needles (28sts).

Work K1, P1 ribbing for 30 rounds.

K1, P1 to last 7sts. Turn and knit all (including the 7 you left unworked previously). This sets you up to work the heel part flat with the opening in the center.

For the next rows work flat in garter st slipping the first st purlwise on each row (to create a nicely finished top edge).

Work 15 rows as mentioned above. (I found it easier to continue working on DPN’s by dividing the stitches onto 2 dpn’s and then working the stitches with a third needle until I could comfortably use a small circular needle.)

Row 16-sl 1, k10, k2tog 3 times, k11

Row 17-sl 1, knit to end

Row 18-sl 1, k10, k3tog, k11

Rows 19&20-sl1, knit to end

Position stitches for grafting the heel closed by placing 12sts on back needle (the one that the yarn is coming from) and 11sts on the front needle. Graft (kitchener stitch) closed (pull through the remaining stitch as if to knit and drop off needle). You could bind off and sew the back seam up if you don’t like grafting…I just hate sewing seams so I prefer to do it this way.

Weave in the ends. Make second one in the same manner.

I really, really need to knit this pattern.

I just don't understand how many needles are used.
The first two rows (before ribbing for 30 rows) say to knit on "both needles". And I just cannot see how that can be done, whether one is increasing the stitches or not.
(Hopefully I can find a tutorial for the figure 8 cast on technique to see if that will explain things.)

Can you help?
Thanks,
Janey

Janey-

Hopefully I can help you understand the beginning rows a little better....it's confusing if you're not familiar with the figure 8 cast-on.

For the cast on you'll be working with 3DPN's....two for the cast-on and one working needle. I found it easier to just continue working with the 3 needles (making sure to pull tightly at the beginning and end of each needle) for at least a few rows otherwise it gets a bit fiddly.

Check out this site for some instructions on the figure 8 cast-on: http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter02/FEATtiptoptoes.html
It might take a few tries but it's a very useful technique to learn :)

I'm having trouble with the heel. After I knit the last seven stitches and knit back, on the next row, do I knit those seven stitches or do I leave them?

Kate is this the part you are having trouble with?
-K1, P1 to last 7sts. Turn and knit all (including the 7 you left unworked previously). This sets you up to work the heel part flat with the opening in the center.

The first row that you will knit flat is K1, P1 up to the last 7sts (leave these unworked only for this row)
Next row you turn your work leaving those 7sts on the needle and knit all of the stitches...so the 7 you left unworked previously are the last 7sts that you will knit on this row.
Turn and continue knitting all stitches working flat.

Thank you! That was what I was having trouble with. Thank you for clearing that up!

I'm still confused by the heel - when you knit to the last and turn your work and knit back, those last 7 fall after the beginning of the round. Do you knit those 7 and they become the new beginning of the round? Or do you knit those 7 and continue with the remaining stitches until you reach the beginning again?

Or, do you knit those 7, turn the work, knit to the beginning of the round again and knit flat from that point?

Or, do you turn the work, go back to the beginning, turn again and continue knitting flat

Hello Lynne. Sorry that my pattern is a bit confusing I'm not the best at writing out what I've done. The step that is in question is the set up row for you to be able to knit the heel area flat. But you need to have that flat area centred on the toe area. That is why you leave the last seven stitches unworked flip and work back along all the stitches and those seven that you had left will now be the last seven you work on the row and then you continue working flat until the end of the heel. Please let me know if this helps! -Crys :)
